Abstract:
The two novels, Memory of Departure (1987) and Gravel Heart (2017), published by Abdulrazak Gurnah over a span of 30 years, share a high degree of similarity in the story setting, protagonist setting and plot, etc. Zanzibar, the island on which the novels are based, was colonized by Portugal, Oman, Germany and Britain, and is a crossroad of Arab-Islamic, African and Western cultures. In both novels, the protagonists received Arab-Islamic cultural education and assimilated African culture. However, the protagonist’s disdain for his father and abandonment of his mother in the two novels reflects his resistance to Arab-Islamic culture and African cultural identity, and the Muslim and African cultural label on the protagonist also becomes the main obstacle for him to integrate into the British society. As an Arab descendant born in Zanzibar, Gurnah wove his thoughts on immigrants’ cultural identity and cultural integration into the novels, telling the tough experience of immigrants with Arab-Islamic, African and Western cultural background in the process of trying to integrate into the Western society. The gap between the three cultures is an intuitive reflection of the living state of “cultural refugees”. The identity dilemma under the multi-cultural construction is merely the superficial level, yet the discrimination in the cultural collision is the real reason for the failure to land on the island.
