Abstract:
Julian Barnes’s Arthur & George cleverly depicts the plight of colored people and the ignorance and arrogance of white people in racial issues in Britain in the late 19th century. It exposes the illusion of “human equality” coined by the white. In the novel, whiteness is mainly reflected in the construction of white identity, class difference between the white and non-white people, and the deliberate “ignorance” of racial discrimination by the white. Based on Frantz Fanon’s postcolonial theory, this paper analyzes whiteness in the novel from three aspects including identity, class and culture. By explaining the unfair social phenomenon caused by racial problems, it reveals that the essence of British racism in the 19th century is the social mechanism of judging people by skin color constructed by the white.
