本研究通过自建语料库，结合语言顺应论分析英汉演讲中的话语标记语“but”和“但是”，以考察言者的社会地位对其使用频率、句法位置、搭配模式和语用功能的影响。结果发现，言者地位越高，使用“but”和“但是”的频率越高，且“but”的使用频次高于“但是”。“but”较常见于句中，“但是”较多见于句首。“但是”的连用比“but”更为频繁，地位高者常用“but”加条件标记语，“但是”加对比标记语，而地位低者极少连用。地位高者多用“but”陈述事实，“但是”表达信念；而地位低者多用“but”转换话题，“但是”表明立场。不同地位的言者使用“but”和“但是”时在句法位置和语用功能上存在显著性差异。演讲中话语标记语“but”和“但是”的使用体现了言者对其社会地位的顺应，具有明显不同的社会语用特征。

Abstract:

Based on two self-built corpora of English and Chinese public speeches, this paper analyzes the influence of speakers’ social status on the frequencies, syntactic positions, collocation modes and pragmatic functions of “but” and “danshi” in public speeches from the perspective of linguistic adaptability theory. It is found that the higher social status the speaker has, the more “but” and “danshi” are employed in public speeches. “But” occurs with higher frequency than “danshi”, and it is used more frequently in sentence-internal position, while “danshi” in sentence-initial position. “Danshi” has more combining forms than “but”. The speakers of high status employ “but” more frequently combined with conditional markers, and use “danshi” more frequently combined with contrastive markers, while the speakers of low status employ few combining forms of both “but” and “danshi”. In terms of pragmatic functions, the speakers of high status mostly use “but” to state facts, and “danshi” to express beliefs, while the speakers of low status use “but” to shift topics, and “danshi” to take a stand. Significant difference is found both in the syntactic position and pragmatic function of “but” and “danshi” employed by speakers of different status. Therefore, as linguistic choices made by speakers through adapting to social status, both “but” and “danshi” in public speeches have distinctive sociopragmatic features.
