Abstract:
Traditionally, the subjects of First World War literature studies are mainly limited to the officer writers, such as Owen, Sassoon, Aldington, Graves, Manning, etc. This thesis tries to explore the war through two works of Herbert George Wells, i.e. The War to End Wars and Mr. Britling Sees It Through. It can be seen that Wells’ attitudes toward the war underwent some changes as the war went on. After detailed analyses, the thesis comes to the conclusion that Wells actually began to have doubts and questions about the war, feeling shocked, disappointed and even disillusioned before the end of the war, thus rendering the disenchantment of First World War motif not being the invention of later anti-war writers.
