Abstract:
The U.S.-Turkish relationship is built upon a unique yet fragile geostrategic basis. In the post-Cold War era, Turkey has been challenged by adjusting its national identity, recalculating its geopolitical values, and resetting its relations with regional powers and great powers. To a large extent, Turkey’s decisions are conditioned by those of its American and European counterparts. At the critical juncture of the Iraq War, America and European countries failed to respect Turkey’s national interests, fundamentally altering the national identity among Turkish public and giving rise to Turkish nationalism and anti-Americanism, ultimately resulting in Erdogan’s assertive foreign policies, which, in turn, has made a profound impact on regional security landscape.
