Abstract:
Halliday says, “Stylistic analysis is comparative in nature.” In interlingual studies, a writer’s choice of stylistic features is always implicitly compared with potential alternatives in the same language. On the theoretical basis of functional stylistics of Systemic Functional Linguistics, the present paper explores the analytic framework of interlingual stylistics by taking the comparative analysis of one English fable and one Chinese fable as an example. We first develop an analytic framework for interlingual functional stylistics according to the theory of functional stylistics, and then we use the theoretical framework to carry out a comparative study of the two fables from both languages. It is found that, firstly, there are differences in the generic structures of the two fables: the English fable develops the moral of the fable by developing the story plot by plot, while the Chinese fable deduces the moral of the fable with the modeling of the characters; secondly, there are differences in the choice of typical characters in the two types of genres: in the English fables, animals and things are often chosen as main characters, while in the Chinese ones, people are often chosen as characters; and finally, there are differences in the model of the development of stories: in English fables, the story develops with the focus on things and actions, while in Chinese ones, it is developed with the focus on people and mode of thinking. It is hoped that the present study can shed some light on the contrastive study of the literary styles between English and Chinese.
