Abstract:
In Enemies, A Love Story, Isaac Bashevis Singer clarifies his thoughts about humanity and modern civilization through his depiction of the living state of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. He believes that the modern civilization represented by New York is actually defined by “the culture of the underworld” which fosters the idolatrous worship of extreme materialism and leads to man’s loss of faith and moral downfall. His characterization of Herman Broder, the Jewish protagonist of the novel, and his negative portrayal of New York in the novel, illustrate his anxieties about the state of human existence and modern urban civilization, and they also exhibit the American elements involved in his artistic creation.
